Carson City resident heads to Washington, D.C., for the summer

Megan Hummel, 19, of Carson City recently left for Washington, D.C., to work as a Congressional intern during the summer for Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D. Her father, Kent, who interned for Dorgan years ago, flew to D.C. to help Hummel settle in and show her around town.

Hummel will be a senior at the University of Nevada, Reno in the fall. Her major is English literature and European history.

Academic achievement for St. Olaf student

Tyson Reed of Carson City was recognized for academic achievement on Honors Day May 5 at St. Olaf College, in Northfield, Minn. Honors Day recognized more than 1,500 students with a 3.3 grade-point average or higher. Reed is a junior.

Law school graduate returns to Carson

Joel Locke graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law, Spokane, Wash., on May 13 with a degree of juris doctor. Locke, a 1996 graduate of Carson High, received his bachelor of science degree in finance from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 2001. After sitting for the Nevada bar in July, Locke plans to serve as law clerk for District Court Judge William Maddox.

College graduate to become a teacher

Joshua Carter of Carson City graduated May 15 with a bachelor of arts degree in English from Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, N.C. Mark Warner, former governor of Virginia, gave the commencement address to more than 1,500 graduates.

Carter will be an English teacher and assistant coach in football and track at Jesse Carson High School in China Grove, N.C.

Graduate receives communication degree

Joshua Roach of Carson City graduated from the University of Portland with a bachelor's degree in organizational communication. He was one of 732 graduates to received a bachelor's degree on May 7.

Graduate receives a Spanish degree

Joshua Greenspan, a 2002 Carson High school graduate, received a bachelor's of arts degree in Spanish from Tulane University in New Orleans. The commencement speakers included former presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton

. Greenspan, an ensign in the United State Navy, was assigned to the USS Tortuga, based in Sasebo, Japan. He will serve as the legal officer.

College honors for Carson City resident

Jeffrey Rogers, the son of Jon and Sally Rogers of Carson City, received Pi Mu Epsilon honors in mathematics at the Macalester College Honors Convocation in St. Paul, Minn., on May 12. Macalester College, founded in 1874, is a national liberal-arts college with a full-time enrollment of 1,841 students.

Silver City offers many programs for youth

Silver City offers a variety of events this summer, all in the Silver City Volunteer Fire Department, unless otherwise noted. Call Quest Lakes at 847-0742 for more information. Programs include:

• 7 p.m. Wednesday: Lecture by Dr. Sue Fawn Chung, scholar, on "The Chinese in Nevada in the 19th Century." Lecture, slide show and Chinese finger food. Funded by Nevada Humanities, Silver City Task Force and Healthy Communities Coalition.

• 6 p.m. June 15: Silver City Task Force meeting. Dinner meeting will be held at the Carson City Hot Springs. Anyone from Silver City is invited to join.

• July 28-29, Nevada Civil War Volunteers Encampment: Silver City Park. This living-history event is suitable for the entire family. Call Larry Steinberg at 847-4545.

• Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training Scholarship: Expenses-paid three-day class at University of Nevada, Reno, in July is available to adults who would like to join the Silver City Task Force.

• Silver City Volunteer Library: Every Sunday 2-4 p.m. The library includes roughly 600 books, including a complete set of current Nevada Revised Statute with subscription, Internet access, a Civil War reference section and many periodicals, videos and encyclopedias.

• Youth Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention Group: This group for 10 to 17-year-olds is meeting through September. Youth will choose their focus and activities and plan events related to prevention. Call Sara at 847-7029.
