Photography exhibit on the move offers a glimpse at 'Altered Landscape'

There are photos of dusty roads and deserted landscapes. Indian teepees flanked by portable toilets. The Luxor Casino and the Boulder Dam.

All on display fewer than 50 feet from Nevada's Constitution.

"The Altered Landscape" photography exhibit is on display in the Joseph Anderson Exhibit Gallery at the Nevada State Library and Archives through June 27. The exhibit showcases contemporary landscape photography from the Nevada Museum of Art.

"The concept is about how culture interacts with landscapes," said Sara Jones, administrator of the Nevada State Library and Archives. "We love statewide art exhibits and this one has that appeal. It has everything from rural settings to more urban landscapes from across the state."

The exhibit features works from more than 20 photographers, including Marilyn Bridges, Robert Dawson, Sant Khalsa and Jeff Brouws.

"I try to find photographs where there's a combined formal beauty with some type of possible social message," Brouws said.

Khalsa said, "My images are intended to create a contemplative space where one can sense the subtle and profound connections between themselves, the natural world and our constructed settings."

The exhibit is part of the Touring Initiative Program created by the Nevada Arts Council. The program delivers high-quality visual-arts exhibits to communities throughout the state by allowing nonprofit agencies to serve as sponsors for the works.

Sponsors may include local arts agencies, arts organizations, community centers, senior centers, museums, libraries and colleges.

"The Altered Landscape" has been exhibited at the Nevada Museum of Art and the Charleston Arts Center in Las Vegas. After its engagement in Carson City, the exhibit will head to the county library in Winnemucca and then to the natural history museum in Las Vegas.

For the photographers, the exhibit's mobility allows them to share their message with more people.

"I'm interested in what's going on in the world and use photography to investigate what I'm curious about," Brouws said. "As long as my curiosity and imagination hold up, I'll be taking photographs."
