Carson softball beats Wooster

The Carson High softball team picked up one of its biggest wins in recent years when it won at Wooster 5-2 on Thursday.

The outcome may not be official yet as a protest could be filed over an obstruction play that happened in the game. It's the second straight year that an obstruction call has had an impact on the Carson-Wooster series as last season the Senators were awarded a run on an obstruction call that helped them win a game.

So nothing can be taken for granted especially after the Carson baseball team was forced to finish a game it seemingly had in control against North Valleys over a protest on Wednesday.

Assuming that the win stands, it virtually locks up a playoff spot for the Senators.

Carson stayed in second in the Sierra League at 13-3 while Wooster fell to 11-5.

With Cassie Vondrak still out with a throat infection, Nikki Keller went the distance for Carson, holding Wooster scoreless after allowing two unearned runs in the first inning.

"Nikki Keller did a phenomenal job from the circle," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "We couldn't ask anything more from her. She mixed up her pitches and threw hard."

Nine players had 10 hits for Carson as Abby Rankl was the only player with two hits.

Dacey Hassey also doubled and had three RBI.

"It was pretty much a team effort," Vickrey said. "This was really big for us. I was really proud of them. They did a good job. Everybody did what they needed to do."

Carson tied the score in the third when Sarah Evans walked. After there were two outs, Abby Rankl singled and Hassey followed with a two-run double.

The Senators took a 3-2 lead in the fifth.

Rankl singled and scored on Candice Rutledge's single.

In the seventh Christa Casci and Kaitlin Burroughs singled and moved up to second and third on a fielder's choice. Hassey scored Casci with a flyball to right field.

After Burroughs rounded third, Wooster tried to pick her off and the throw got away. As Burroughs tried to score, she made contact with another infielder and was thrown out at the plate on a bang-bang play.

Burroughs was awarded home on an obstruction call to make it 5-2. Vickrey said a protest could be filed over the play.

Loretta Cagle, Keller, Desiree Clampitt and Evans all added a hit for Carson.
