Golfing for a good cause; kids' shots due

Want to have a good time and help someone out as you do it? Join the folks Sunday at Empire Ranch Golf Course for the Jan Sparks Memorial Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. Jan, who passed away last month, was the wife of former head pro Jeff Sparks. Her friends there are holding the tournament so that proceeds can be used for the medical expenses that were incurred. It will be a four-person-scramble format at $100 per person, which includes lunch and some really great prizes. If you don't have a foursome, they will pair you up. Call 885-2100 for information. Good news for parents, dubious for kids: School is time to slow down in school zones and get the kids' shots, so listen up. The Carson City Community Health Clinic gives immunization shots every Thursday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. at 1711 N. Roop St. They cover kids up to age 18, take Medicaid, or charge $15 for the first shot (bring your records), and $20 (total) for the next two-five shots. They will accept donations or waive the fee if you are unable to pay. The important thing is to get all children immunized before they enter kindergarten. Their number is 887-2195. There is NO excuse not to get this done on time. Just remember to let the alcohol dry before they stick you in the arm (that way it doesn't sting).

The sheriff department's National Night Out was a great success, and brought out lots of Carsonites for the fun, hoopla and free food. Everyone had a great time seeing all the different agencies, including the volunteers (VIPS), put on a terrific show. Diane Bertram was introduced as the new VIPS coordinator ... welcome aboard. See you next August if you missed it this year.

Sheriff Furlong put on a great barbecue a week ago for the troops. Chuck, Don and Ken were the "cookers," and put out some mean food, especially Ken's deep-fried catfish ... tasty, tasty.

Things don't seem to change, do they? Ken Fraser found this one from a February 1962 Readers Digest: "Vice President Lyndon Johnson received the following message from a Native-American on a reservation: 'Be careful with your immigration laws. We were careless with ours.'"

And Patty and Woody Sharpe sent this: "Mrs. Johnson (no relation to the above, we think) decided to have her portrait painted by a well-known artist. She told the artist, 'Paint me with three-carat diamond earrings, a large diamond necklace, glimmering emerald bracelets and a beautiful, red ruby ring.' 'But ma'am, you're not wearing any of those things,' said the artist. 'I know,' replied Mrs. Johnson. 'My health is not good, and my husband is having an affair with his secretary. When I die, I'm sure he will marry her, and I want the b**** to go nuts looking for the jewelry.'"

We see that the University of Nevada has a new logo. It's a "block N" in a box. Big deal. If you're not from Reno, what will people think it stands for? 'N'othing? 'N'abisco? 'N'evermind? And they pay people to come up with these things? 'N'evermore.

There will NOT be a movie tomorrow night at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Instead there will be a chautauqua performed by Michael Fischer as Carson Valley pioneer H. F. Dangberg. It starts at 7 p.m. and you're invited to bring a picnic and enjoy the show. It's free, and a great way to spend an evening with the family. Maybe next year we can get a movie, John?

Good stuff: The Cracker Box's Jerry Massad goes to England tomorrow to carry Jeff Duncan's golf clubs as he competes in a golf tournament ... what fun; Camilo and Andi O'Kuinghttons have returned from their tour of South America and will show their love of tango on Saturday at the Brewery Arts Center during Larry and Craig's classical guitar recital (call 883-1976 for details). We hope this won't be the only time we get to see them dance; two new restaurants are opening up soon, a Vietnamese eatery where East Ocean used to be, and a French one just opposite the Villa Basque Deli. Now all we need is a German, a Greek and a Red Lobster, and our lives would be complete (no comments, please).

More good stuff: Kelley and Jeremy Harding were married in a lovely ceremony at Piper's Opera House last week. Too bad Terry Ward missed it; Scott Gehagen (formerly of KPTL) of Nevada Mobile Sound has a great voice and ran some terrific music and contests during the fun musical "Go Go Beach."

Our sympathies go out to the family of the late Sen. Carl Dodge of Fallon. He and Sen. Jacobsen leave Nevada with big shoes to fill.
