Governors Field gets upgrades

Improvement work at Governors Field to make it more disabled-accessible should be completed by late September or early October.

The site is a favorite for such activities as Pop Warner football and the annual Jaycees Easter egg hunt. Access during the day, when Governors Field is least crowded, will be restricted when parking lot grading begins.

This could start as early as next week.

The project is designed to provide better access for disabled park users and pedestrians, said Scott Fahrenbruch, director of operations for the city's Parks and Recreation Department.

"And while we were making the park more handicapped-accessible, we wanted to see if we could squeeze in more spaces," he said.

There will be 29 more parking spaces, allowing for 362 parking spaces and eight disabled spaces, Fahrenbruch said.

There also will be more pathways, the pavement will be redone, and there will be more space for spectators, he said.

People will have to leave their vehicles elsewhere and walk into the park Mondays through Thursdays until 4 p.m. Access will be unrestricted on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays when Governors Field is at its busiest, he said.

The 21-acre park at the corner of Evalyn Drive and Roop Street has four Little League fields, two Babe Ruth fields, two Pop Warner football fields, four T-ball fields and three batting cages. It also has a concession stand, mini park, benches, picnic tables, playground equipment and restrooms.

Final cost for the work will be $600,000 to $800,000.
