Fontaine and Howe chosen to vie for school trustee District 6

Jeff Fontaine and Barbara Howe will compete for Carson City School District Trustee District 6 seat.

Fontaine received 2,695, or 27.09 percent of the vote. Howe obtained 3.398, or 34.15 percent of the vote.

"I'm glad," said Fontaine, who was appointed to the school board seat in March to replace Sheila Ward, who moved out of the area and is the Republican candidate for state Assembly District 40.

"I'm very happy and very honored to move on to the general election."

Fontaine's full-time job is director of the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Though he didn't go door to door seeking support, he did speak to various groups and attended a variety of candidate forums.

And, Fontaine said, "I didn't solicit or accept campaign contributions. I tried to campaign through networking " the good old-fashioned way."

Howe was out of town on business and couldn't be reached for comment.

She is a maternal child health nutritionist with the Nevada State Health Division.

The third-place finisher, Roger Kirkland, received 2,630, or 26.43 percent of the vote in this close race.

He said that he should have walked door to door more, but spent a lot of time in forums and meeting with groups during the campaign and enjoyed the experience.

Incumbent Norman Scoggin ran unopposed for District 1.

Two other school district seats will appear on the Nov. 7 general election ballot.

Incumbent James Hukari is being challenged by Joe Enge for District 3. and Incumbent Bob Crowell will face Ann Bednarski in District 4.
