Charlie Lawson, winner of the Democratic primary for Lyon County Commission District 2, promises more of the same kind of campaigning in the general election campaign as he gave in the primary.
"I knocked on over 2,000 doors, and I think that was a big part of why I got a better vote than Mr. Geurts," he said. "I've lost about 40 pounds walking the campaign trail, and that hot weather didn't help."
Lawson defeated Silver Springs Regional Advisory Council Chairman Pat Geurts with 67.87 percent to Geurts' 31.13 percent. Lawson collected 1,686 votes and Geurts' 762 votes.
Lawson will face Larry McPherson in the general election. McPherson, who leads the local Pony Express Association, won the GOP primary with 60.19 percent or 2,699 votes to incumbent Chet Hillyard's 39.81 percent, or 1,785 votes.
Lawson said his style of personal campaigning helped him understand the problems people face.
"I met some really nice people," he said. "And I did get a better understanding of the lives of folks than what you hear at meetings."
Lawson said he plans to meet with department heads in the near future and doesn't expect to make any drastic changes if elected.
