White Bass fishing red hot at Lahontan Reservoir

BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): Lower Blue Lake was good all week. DF&G has made several plants in the last several days at both lakes.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Randy Picton of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677): This last weekend continued to be good to very good for most anglers. The local bait fishermen are getting fish up to 3 pounds in the channels out of Buckeye and North Buckeye Bays with nightcrawlers and Power Bait. With the water levels dropping it's pretty much "hunting" season. The area from the Marina to the dam is pretty clear and still very "trollable."

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that the fishing is rated as good. The Kirkwood Public Utility District recently planted 1,500 rainbows, with 40 % being trophy trout up to 7 pounds each. A 7-pounder was caught at the Spillway with a Kastmaster lure.

CARSON RIVERS AND NEARBY WATERS, CALIF: There will be two fish plants (the next two Fridays) before Labor Day by Alpine County, in addition to the normal plants by DF&G.

East Carson River: Brad Davis of the Carson River Resort (877-694-2229): DF&G planted last Thursday, so the fishermen killed them. A guy caught a 4.9 pounder and a 2.8 pounder on a Rapala lure from near the bridge, upstream from the Resort. Julian Martin of South Lake Tahoe caught a 7-pound rainbow on a Pheasant Tail fly from that same area.

West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported the water is low and clear, making fishing a challenge for the fishermen. Catching average sized fish.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113) or (530-365-8140): Anglers can expect best bite early in the mornings back-bouncing sardine wrapped K-15 or K-16 Kwikfish lures in silver or gold color combos. Look to switch over to roe tipped with a Quickie in hot pink or flame colors, back-bounced or mooched in deeper holes as the sun gets on the water. Most productive water has been from the outlet downstream above Gridley with some good bank fishing opportunities upstream in the low flow section near Oroville. Salmon have been averaging 18-22 pounds, with the occasional big 30+ pound salmon being caught.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683): Fishing has really picked up this past week. Limits of good sized rainbows (14-16 inches) are being caught at Spring Creek, the Boat Ramp and the east end of the dam. Nightcrawlers are working best. Chartreuse Power Bait produced limits for fishermen at Nightcrawler Bay, Turkey Point and Lunker Point.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported Ichian Shen of South Lake Tahoe caught a 9.5 pound rainbow on a Kastmaster lure, while trolling on Sunday.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Don Hettrick and Don Quilici, both of Carson City, and Rich Bachle of Fernley trolled last Thursday (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) in the area east of "The Narrows." They caught and released several hundred White Bass. They trolled with an assortment of Apexs, lead-head Jigs, Kastmasters, rubber Minnows, Rapalas, Roostertails, Spin-N-Glows, Thomas Buoyants, TOR-P-DO's and caught Bass on all of the them.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Dick and LaNora Clyde of Carson City and their granddaughter Shayla, age 10, trolled and jigged from their boat, last week in the area east of "The Narrows." It was Shayla's first fishing trip. Each of the three of them caught and released more than 50 White Bass. They were using Needlefish lures and small spinners with silver blades.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Bob "Slick" McCulloch and his grandson Colin, age 12, both of Carson City, trolled last week. They each caught and released about 40 White Bass, while trolling with all kinds of lures.

SACRAMENTO RIVER: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448): King Salmon: Fishing for Kings is good, catching 2-5 fish a day. Number of salmon coming up river is increasing daily. All salmon being caught using T-50 Flatfish lures, Chrome in color, with a sardine wrap. All Salmon are 20-30 pounds average.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113) or (530-365-8140): Fishing for king salmon has continued to be fair to good. Most anglers are reporting two to four fish per boat for salmon averaging 18-26 pounds. Most productive water has been the Barge Hole near Anderson, down stream to Chico. Big fish of the week was a 34-pound chrome bright king salmon caught by Rick Tracy from Carson City, Nevada on Aug. 17, back-bouncing roe.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775) 266-3550: It is dead quiet for fishing. The water is warm and the lake level is still dropping. Not much going on except for water skiing and jet skis.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF: Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): A 5-pound brown on a plastic worm from shore and a 3-pound rainbow while stillfishing with Power Bait. Stringers coming in on Mosquito flies being tossed from boats.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: We've got a lot of forest fires burning inn this area, right now. The fishing continues to be excellent. This is the best year, I've ever seen. It is excellent both from shore and boats. Lots of rainbows and browns being caught. Two fishermen in 1.5 hours caught 8 browns and 2 cuttbows, using crickets.
