Galena High graduate Matt Kinsinger and Carson City's Hi Jeppson pulled off an impressive sweep for Northern Nevada in the Nevada State Amateur Championships held Monday through Wednesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Kinsinger won the scratch title over a 7,200-yard course while Jeppson won the net title over a 6,800-yard course. Kinsinger shot a three-round total of 8-under-par 211 (67-68-73) on the par-72 course to win title by three strokes over Matt Edwards. Jeppson shot a 7-under 209 (71-67-71) to win the net division by three strokes over Terry Realm.
Kinsinger just completed his sophomore year at UNLV where he helped the Rebels to a 19th place finish at the NCAA Championships and a No. 10 ranking in the final poll. Kinsinger was also named to the all-Mountain West Conference academic team and as a Mountain West Scholar athlete.
Athletes who have a 3.0 grade point average or higher who have significantly contributed to their team are named to the all-academic team while athletes with a 3.5 G.P.A. or better are named as scholar-athletes. Kinsinger has a 3.85 G.P.A. in finance.
FITZGERALD FIRES ACE
Eagle Valley Golf Course Pro Josh Fitzgerald hit his first hole-in-one on Wednesday.
Playing on Eagle Valley's West course on the fifth hole, Fitzgerald shot from the blue tee using an 8-iron.
"it hit the front of the green, bounced and rolled in," Fitzgerald said. The shot was witnessed by Rich Dixon and Bill Young.
