The Yerington High football team looks to build on its success from last season when it competed for a playoff berth for the first time in the Northern 2A after moving down from the 3A level.
Yerington finished third in the Northern 2A last year, advancing to the Northern 2A playoffs. The Lions gave Northern 2A powers Lovelock and Battle Mountain all they could handle last year in the regular season before suffering their only two losses in league play.
The Lions look to have a strong nucleus to build on last year's success. Yerington looks to be solid up front with returning senior center Austen Vaughan and returning starting guard Steven Skroch. There's also Eric Bonse and Jimmy Butler.
Yerington also has a solid foundation at the skilled positions, with junior returnee in Daniel Bauer, who played at both quarterback and running back in a recent scrimmage against Portola, Calif. Bauer should be a versatile threat with his running and passing ability.
There's also fullback Sean Watson, flyback Tim Fitzpatrick and halfback Chris Smith, who will also be among the defensive leaders.
Under coachCodyNeville,Yerington is lookiing to use a power running with its passing to provide balance for the deception of its fly offense.
The Lions will likely depend on power more than speed this season
Yerington will open the season Sept. 1 in a Northern 2A game against Independence.
