BISHOP, CALIF. Patti Apted of the Lake Sabrina Boat Landing (760-873-7425):
Sabrina Lake: Fishing this week was GREAT with some of the larger Alper's finally coming out of hiding. Fishing the inlet with worms, Power Bait or jigs produced some very nice limits over the Labor Day weekend. Drifting Power Bait or a worm with a bobber were getting some mighty fine fish. Trolling flashers and a worm, Thomas Buoyant, olive Woolly Bugger or olive Matuka were working for the boaters.
BLUE LAKES AREA, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930): It was a quiet weekend with not a lot of fish caught at either lake.
BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF: Randy Picton of the Bridgeport Reservoir RV Park and Marina (888-377-1677): Even though the lake has dropped quite a few feet in the last few weeks, the fish have re grouped and the fishing has become very good to excellent for most anglers. Best bait fishing is just off of the marina over the old East Walker channel. Nightcrawlers, floating baits, and Salmon eggs doing the job. For the fly guys and gals, Midges, San Juan Worms, Callibatis, leach and perch patterns are best. Weed beds around the airport and the mouth of the East Walker are producing some very nice rainbows, a few browns, and even some fat perch. Buckeye is still producing: Look for the clear springs .
CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby said that he had reports of a number of limits caught off the dam, but nothing big. Two of the anglers caught their limits with inflated nightcrawlers.
CARSON RIVERS CALIF: West Carson River: Dave Kirby reported that Cal Piccolo of San Jose caught a 4-pound brown on a nightcrawler on Sept. 1.
CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: The Convict Lake Resort (800-992-2260): Top fish were a 7.80 pound rainbow on Chartreuse Power Bait from the north shore, a 4.90 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler from the south shore and a 4.70 pound rainbow on a nightcrawler from the north shore.
FEATHER RIVER, CALIF: Dave Jacobs/Hank Mautz (Professional Guide Service) (800-355-3113) or (530-365-8140): Currently flows into the Feather River near the town of Gridley are 3,900 CFS. Anglers can expect best bite early in the mornings back-bouncing sardine wrapped K-15 or K-16 Kwikfish lures in silver or gold color combos. Look to switch over to roe tipped with a Quickie in hot pink or flame colors, back-bounced or mooched in deeper holes as the sun gets on the water. Most productive water has been from the outlet downstream above Gridley with some good bank fishing opportunities upstream in the low flow section near Oroville. Driftboaters have also reported good fishing in the low flow section of the Feather. Salmon have been averaging 18-22 pounds, with the occasional big 30+ pound salmon being caught. Salmon limits are 3 salmon per person.
HEENAN LAKE, CALIF: Opened on Sept. 1. Dave Kirby reported that it was busy on opening day, mostly with fishermen in float tubes. The fly fishermen averaged about 4 fish per angler, while the spincasters averaged about 5 fish per angler. The water was pretty clear.
INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that Jim Jutson of Carson City caught a limit on Power Bait, including a 4-pound rainbow (22 inches).
LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Missy Swain at Burke's Market (Closed on Mondays) at Silver Springs (775-577-2750): The fishing has been fabulous! They are catching White Bass and Wipers, everywhere. Young brothers, Madison and Gabriel Richards of Silver Springs pulled in a stringer full of Wipers and a couple of Largemouth Bass. Brittany Craig, 8, of Silver Springs won the Carp derby last weekend with a 6.5 pound Carp. Bill Warner of Silver Springs caught 4 Walleye, 1 Perch and a few Wipers, fishing off Beach No. 8 with jigs.
LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV: Don Hettrick, John Holloway and Don Quilici, all of Carson City, caught and released hundreds of small White Bass while trolling small flasher blades and small lures, last Thursday morning.
RED LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby said that a lady told him they camped there for two days. They caught their limits, but nothing big, on Power Bait.
SACRAMENTO RIVER: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing, Redding, Calif. (800-670-4448):King Salmon: Fishing for Kings is fair to good, Woodson Bridge area. Picking up as of Tuesday. Catching 2-4 salmon a day, not as many salmon being brought in as we would expect for this time of year, but huge salmon. Seeing salmon up to 44 pounds already. Hit and miss with fishing around the well known Barge Hole. All Salmon are 20 pounds average. Being caught using Worden's Flatfish lures, T-50's , Chrome, with a sardine wrap.
TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775) 266-3550: Not a thing to report. Not very many people out. It was a quiet weekend, except for the water skiers. I haven't seen a fish in quite a while.
TWIN LAKES, CALIF: Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village (760-932-7071): Think red and gold! A Thomas Buoyant lure thrown by Regina Valdez of Gardnerville brought in a 3-pound, 11-ounce rainbow. Tony Valdez of Gardnerville caught a 4-pound, 7-ounce brown on a Mepps lure. Georgina Whitmire of Gardnerville caught a 5.5 pound rainbow on a black/gold Rapala lure. Worms worked well for stringers of 2-3 pound rainbows.
WALKER RIVERS, NEV: East Walker: Randy Picton reported that the East Walker River is loaded with fish and very fishable. Local fly expert Scott Flint landed and released a brown over six pounds Monday on a No. 20 blood Midge.
WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, NEV: Dennis Dunn at the Wild Horse Resort (775) 758-6472: They have been having a big fair in town (Elko) and it has been dead up here, this last. The fishing is still excellent. They are catching bucketfulls of Perch and lots of trout, up to 4-5 pounds. The bass and catfish have been slow.
