Tigersharks strong in state qualifier

Several swimmers for the Carson Tigersharks had outstanding efforts at the Douglas Last Chance Meet held over the weekend in Minden.

The Tigersharks used the meet as a chance to qualify in events they had yet to qualify in for the State Championships or as a final tuneup for the state meet. The Tigersharks will host the State Championships in January at the Carson Aquatic Facility. Those who had top three finishes included:

6 and under girls: Mikel Flatley - 25-yard freestyle, third; 50 free, third; 25 backstroke, third; 50 breaststroke, first. Katie Fischer - 50 free, first; 25 back, second. 6 and under boys: River Flatley - 25 back, third; 50 back, third; 25 butterfly, second. Nick Fischer - 50 free, first; 25 back, second. Gabe Kenney - 50 free, third; 25 fly, first.

8 and under Girls: Kelsey Bradley - 50 free, third; 25 back, third; 25 fly, first. 9-10 girls: Vanessa Rauch - 50 free, second; 100 free, second; 200 free, second; 50 back, third; 100 back, second. 11-12 girls: Jessica Fahrenbruch - 50 back, third.

13-14 boys: Albert Reed - 100 free, third; 200 free, third; 1,650 free, second; 100 back, first; 200 back, third; 100 fly, first; 200 fly, firsrt; 200 individual medley, second. 15-18 girls: Julie Asire - 500 free, third. Samantha Ashmore - 50 free, third; 100 fly, third. Barbara Perkins - 100 free, second; 200 free, second; 500 free, first.

15-18 boys: Garrett Clayton - 200 free, first; 100 breaststroke, first; 200 breaststroke, first; 200 I.M., second. Kevin Dyer - 200 free, first; 100 back, second; 100 fly, second; 400 I.M., first. Kurt Anderson - 200 back, third. Ryan Hogan - 200 fly, first. Jacob Cornwell - 400 I.M., second.

Tigersharks who qualifed for state over the weekend were Kurt Andersen, Quino Chavez, Scott Wandel, Shaylee Nystrom and Abby Pittman.

Silver Stage, ROP boys are winners

Jared Roberts had 18 points, nine rebounds and six assists as the Silver Stage boys basketball team rolled to a 91-10 win over Virginia City on Tuesday.

Erick Geddes added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, Devon Breeden had 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, David Dyess scored 10 points and Vince Griffith had 10 points and nine rebounds.

ROP 62, SIERRA RIDGE 43

Stefano Latu scored 13 points and Robert Johnson added 13 points to help lead Rite of Passage to the win over Sierra Ridge from San Andreas, Calif.

HUG 56, DAYTON GIRLS 45

The Dayton High girls basketball team couldn't overcome its struggles in the first half in its loss to Hug. Dayton trailed 34-12 at halftime before mounting a comeback.

"We played a great second half but came out sluggish the first half," Dayton coach Shari Andreasen said.

Rebecca Monzello scored 13 of her 19 points in the second half for Dayton. "Rebecca Monzello played a great game from start to finish and the younger ones stepped up and followed in the second half. It was a good game to learn from."

Brittany Hill scored 15 points and Ariella Ruybal added seven points for the Dust Devils.

Bowman Newcomer of the Year

Carson High graduate Cassie Bowman helped the William Penn women's soccer team of Iowa write a Cinderella story this season before it ended at the NAIA National Championships.

The Lady Statesmen finished the year at 6-14-1 overall and 3-4 in the Midwest Classic Conference. But William Penn was able to exceed expecations with three straight upsets in the MCC Tournament to advance to the NAIA Region VII Tournament.

William Penn beat Iowa Wesleyan 3-1, Viterbo 4-2 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime and Grand View 1-0 for the title. William Penn's season came to an end in a 2-0 loss to Trinity Christian of Illinois in the regional semifinals.

Bowman, a freshman, started in all 21 games and scored a conference-best 15 goals and added an assist for a total of 31 points. The 15 goals is the fifth most for a season in school history and her 31 points is the seventh most in school history.

She had three game-winning goals and was voted Conference Newcomer of the Year and to the all-conference second team. She was also won conference Player of the Week honors twice.
