Comeback win for Grizzlies

The Galena High boys basketball team's bread and butter over the years under coach Tom Mauer has been defense.

So it's not surprising that Mauer was upset with his team's defensive effort even though the Grizzlies were able to put together a solid second half in a 72-60 win at Reed on Tuesday in a High Desert League opener.

Reed led 28-26 at halftime before Galena outscored the Raiders 23-16 in the third quarter and 25-16 in the final period.

The Raiders - without a starter over 6-0 tall - were able to hurt the Grizzlies with seven three-pointers. But Galena was also able to hit seven threes.

"We didn't play a lick of defense," Mauer said. "I'm absolutely furious with my team on defense."

Mauer said today's practice will be "two hours of defense" where his team will "not touch the ball."

"It's just unacceptable and that's exactly what I told them," Mauer said. "It's glaring now and it's got to be addressed. Mauer's teams have lived and made their beds with defense."

Luke Babbitt scored 34 points, Brice Crook had 16 points and Eric Maupin added 11 for Galena.
