(Staff report) - A California Highway Patrol officer from the Truckee area office is in serious condition following an accident on Interstate 80 on Thursday morning.
Sgt. S. Harris was responding to a different accident on westbound Interstate 80 when he and three other drivers came upon a diesel spill in the roadway near Hirschdale around 8:30 a.m., said CHP Chief Stan Perez from the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team out of Sacramento.
The vehicles all crashed as a result of the fuel spill and wet conditions, Perez said.
Harris' Dodge Durango rolled over at least two times and came to rest off the right shoulder of the interstate.
"He was wearing a seat belt, thank God," Perez said.
Harris was flown by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Perez would not release Harris' first name or his city of residence.
Three other people involved in the accident were taken to the hospital by ambulance, but Perez was unsure of their conditions and would not release their names or where they were taken for treatment.
The accident is still under investigation by the accident investigation team, which was called to the scene because there were "multiple serious injuries" in the accident, Perez said.
