Recycling your Christmas tree

So sadly comes the time when the Christmas tree has to go. For cut trees, here's the drill:

curbside pick up

If you are a customer of Capital Sanitation or Douglas Disposal, just put your tree at the curb with your trash.

Capital Sanitation will pick up trees through Friday and on Monday on your regularly scheduled day if you leave it at the curb.

Carson City

Those without curbside service can drop off trees at one of these sites:

• Carson City landfill, 7001 Highway 50 E.

• Carson City Corporate Yard, 3505 Butti Way

• Parking lot of the old Kmart, corner of North Carson Street and College parkway

• Old Wal-Mart parking lot, including J.C. Penney, corner of Clearview and South Carson Street

The trees will be turned into mulch, which city residents can pick up free at the landfill. Call 887-2355 for information.

Douglas County

Douglas Disposal will pick up trees from Monday-Jan. 5 on your regularly scheduled day if you leave it at the curb.

Those without curbside service can leave their tree with a neighbor who has curbside service or drop them off at their neighborhood park. Pick up sites include: Lampe Park, Johnson Lane Park, Topaz Ranch Estates Park, Ranchos Aspen Park, the fairgrounds, Zephyr Cove Park or Kahle Community Park.

The trees will be chipped and turned into mulch for use in the parks. Flocked trees are not accepted.

Call Douglas Parks and Recreation at 782-9835 for information.

Washoe county

Washoe County residents can take their Christmas trees to recycling centers in Rancho San Rafael, Bartley Ranch Regional and Shadow Mountain parks from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Jan. 15. Cost is $3.

The trees will be chipped into mulch to be used in the parks and other open spaces in the county.

In all areas, decorations, lights, tinsel, bases or anything else must be removed from trees before recycling.

NOTE: No Christmas tree-recycling program is available in Lyon or Storey counties.
