Lyon officials to attend seminar in preparation for new jail

Lyon County officials plan to move ahead on the design of the new jail, and one way they will begin is to travel to Longmont, Colo., this spring.

Seven county officials plan to take part in the National Institute of Corrections' Planning of New Institutions program, also called PONI, in Longmont on March 27-29. The National Institute of Corrections is part of the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons.

County Manager Donna Kristaponis will attend, along with incoming Sheriff Allen Veil, jail manager Capt. Kathy Heston, county engineer Dick Faber, Comptroller Josh Foli, Commissioner Don Tibbals and Commissioner-elect Larry McPherson.

The program requires the attendance of the county manager, sheriff, jail manager and one commissioner, but Kristaponis said she thought it would be prudent to include Faber, Foli and McPherson, the latter because the jail is likely to be built in his district, Silver Springs. She emphasized that no final decision on the jail's location had been made.

She said she wanted Foli there so he could learn about federal funding options, and Faber because as engineer he would be deeply involved in the new design.

She added that corrections consultant David Bennett encouraged both the design and attending the PONI program.
