Gov. Kenny Guinn and Assemblywoman Debbie Smith, D-Sparks, are among those who will be on hand today when the state kicks off service for its new 211 phone number.
Smith said Nevadans will be able to dial that number when they need help with problems ranging from domestic violence, threats of suicide and homelessness, to finding child care or help for the elderly. She sponsored legislation creating the service, including a $200,000 appropriation to set up and operate it.
The number is similar to the universal 911 number for police, fire and medical emergencies but, instead, she said it will connect people who need help with the appropriate community service organization. The call will be free from anywhere in the state.
The ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Capitol.
