The Yerington boys basketball team pulled away down the stretch at the foul line to beat Lowry 69-50 at home in a Northern 3A first round playoff game on Wednesday.
Yerington coach Daron Wildermuth said the game was much closer than the final score as Lowry pulled to within five points with five minutes left before the Lions pulled away at the foul line. Yerington hit 19-of-23 (83 percent) free throws. "We came up huge," Wildermuth said. "We played well."
Jeremy Means and Ryan Rife each scored 17 points for the Lions. Yerington advanced to a semifinal matchup with Northern 3A regular season champion Dayton at Winnemucca on Friday. The winner clinches a spot in the NIAA 3A State Tournament while the loser still has a shot to make it to state in Saturday's third place game.
"They are obviously a great ball club," Wildermuth said. "We have to win one of the next two."
