Reno's Joey Gilbert can now add another title to the many in his already full resume: Champion.
Gilbert took it to Jimmy Lange from start to finish before finally winning on a technical knockout halfway through the third round to win the North American Boxing Organization title on Saturday in Fairfax, Va.
"He dominated all three rounds," said Mark Schopper, Gilbert's law partner and publicist.
Gilbert knocked down Lange in the first round. Schopper said Gilbert almost won the fight with a first round knockout, but Lange was barely able to survive the count. Schopper said Lange was so badly beaten by Gilbert (11-1, 8) that the fight had to be stopped in the third round.
The fight was a far cry from their bout in 2004 that was seen on "The Contender," a relatively close contest that Gilbert won by unanimous decision. The fight was also essentially a home bout for Lange in front of a partisan crowd, but Schopper said Gilbert quickly silenced the fans. "They went dead silent after the first round pretty much," Schopper said.
