Prepare to spruce up in time for the Oscars

Get ready for an outstanding Night at the Oscars presented each year by the Carson City Soroptimist International. What I really like about the night is you can get as dressed up as you want and dazzle for one night.

Dress as your favorite star or get that dress that's been hanging in your closet that has been begging you to take it out on the town, throw on some heels, and enjoy the Oscars in Style.

This year, there will be a jewelry raffle and free glamour photos. The dinner will be carved prime rib with rolls, mushroom caps Florentine, jumbo shrimp - and don't forget the complimentary champagne.

Of course, I am always looking for celebrity male waiters, if you know of anyone who would like to help the women keep their champagne glasses filled to the brim. This night is always such a great time don't miss out.

The Piñon Plaza is donating the room with a new big screen to view the event in top style. A specially made ice sculpture is a must-see, and there is a raffle for a beautiful diamond.

To get your tickets, call or head down to the Sugar Pine Cove. I am making it a girl's night, but men are definitely welcome to come handsomely dressed. Mark Frady at Tux Town has specials on tuxedos. See you at the Oscars!

Carson High School Senior Erin Holderman is offering certified chair massages for $1 a minute. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Second Chance Fund established by the Carson City Deputies Association to help provide education, long-term medical care and basic needs to two children allegedly starved and held captive by their family.

The fundraiser is Erin's senior project. I have known Erin for a long, long time and am very impressed by this wonderful project. Each year, I see more and more of our Carson High Seniors reaching out to help their entire community with their projects, not just, what is required to graduate. It is gratifying to know our future leaders are coming up with big hearts.

Family nights are very important. Wednesday is my oldest son, Kyle's birthday. He started a tradition in our family of "Wednesday family game night."

This is very important way of getting your children back to the simple basics and providing them traditions to embrace and pass on. Parenting is not just coming home tired from work, eating dinner, going to bed, and starting the cycle all over. Show children you can make time to enjoy them by designating a night your family can get together have a few laughs.

The Carson City Library has this covered with a special family night of stories. Members of Teens Embracing Reading in Carson will produce the story program, and will dramatize stories using puppets and readers' theater and read picture books. There will be songs and a craft activity to finish the program.

Teens Embracing Reading in Carson meets monthly to talk about books, plan library events for teens and children, and volunteer for the library. Family Night is under the guidance of Youth Services Librarian Cory King.
