Owens earns shot at national all-star team

Samantha Owens, a fifth grader at Fritch Elementary School, has earned a chance to play for a national all-star sixth grade girls basketball team.

Owens competed in Folsom, Calif., this past weekend as a fifth grader in the sixth grade division of the Adidas Northern California All-Star Camp. Owens not only earned a spot on the 20-member Northern California all-star team, but played in the championship game in which she was evaluated for the Adidas Phenom National Invitational to be held Aug. 10 and 11.

Owens was one of 13 players chosen from two Northern California regional sites to compete for a spot on the sixth grade national all-star team.

WNCC openers this weekend

The Western Nevada Community College baseball team will play its opening home series this weekend as it continues Scenic West Conference play against Colorado Northwestern.

With John L. Harvey Field still under construction, this weekend's series will be played at Ron McNutt Field. To celebrate the first ever home games for the Wildcats, admission to Friday's games will be free.

Doubleheaders will be held on Friday and Saturday. Game times for each day will be noon and 3 p.m. WNCC comes into the series at 7-9 and 1-3 in conference.

Pop Warner signups

Signups have been scheduled for Carson City Pop Warner and Cheerleaders. The schedule is as follows:

9-11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, Governor's Field snack bar; 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, March 4, Edmonds Sports Complex snack bar; 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, Carson City Community Center gym east entrance; 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, community center gym east entrance; 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, community center Sierra Room.

Final registration date is from 10 am.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 20 at the Governor's Field football shack.

Cost is $150. After May 20, cost is $175. Family discounts are available. Age divisions range from 5-15 and weight divisions for football ranged from 35 pounds to unlimited (160 pounds and above).
