Carson City School board trustee position to be advertised

The issue of finding Sheila Ward's replacement for the Carson City School District Board of Trustees will come before the board at its March 28 meeting.

But before the board can make a decision about a replacement the school district needs to advertise the position in a newspaper, according to Nevada law.

Ward, who joined the school board in 2001 by appointment, stepped down early this month because she moved out of the boundaries designated for the district's sixth seat.

District Superintendent Dr. Mary Pierczynski will update trustees tonight about the plan to fill the position.

The person who is chosen will serve until the end of Ward's term, which is through December.

"We're going to run the advertisement for nearly four weeks, more than the required time, so people in the community have time to determine if they want to apply and to check with the clerk's office, Alan Glover's office, to make sure they're in Mrs. Ward's district," Pierczynski said.

When a board member resigns, the board must select a new person to fill that position.

Had Ward remained on the board, she would have had to run in the fall election to be considered for a second four-year term.

Her first four-year term started in 2002, a year after she was appointed to fill the seat vacated by Jean Kvam, who left to become a teacher in the district.

The trustee position is a discussion item at tonight's board meeting, and board members can ask questions about the process.
