Treasures on display from the A. Leck Collection

The Capital City Arts Initiative's Caffeine! Gallery at Comma Coffee will be displaying works selection from the collection of CCAI Exhibition Coordinator Alyssa Leck's collection throughout the month.

There will be a reception from 5-6 p.m. today.

Comma Coffee is located in Carson City's historic downtown at 312 Carson St. across from the State Legislature Building. The exhibition and reception are free. and the public is cordially invited.

The exhibition is the first of an "Artists Collecting Artists" series that highlights the strong tradition in northern Nevada of contemporary artists collecting the work of their peers.

Childbirth Education Series to begin

Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center is hosting the Childbirth Education Series.

Classes are from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Bristlecone Room. Classes begin Monday and continue to Jan. 30, on Mondays, and Jan. 26 to Feb. 16, on Thursdays.

Topics covered include fetal growth and development, changes in the body, breathing, and other labor techniques. To make a reservation, call 885-4210.

Business offers discount to seniors for cleanup

Matt Achenbach of Countryside Lawns in Carson City is offering a 50 percent discount for any type of labor to senior citizens in the Carson City area to help clean up from flood damage.

The business has a Bobcat and dump truck to help haul away debris and can pump water out of basements and crawl spaces. It can also help with sandbagging.

Students to replant Waterfall burn area

The Boys & Girls Club youth will be planting native seed mixes in the area burned by the Waterfall fire Thursday to try to help prevent future wildfires.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has been teaching the children about the Waterfall fire, its effects, how to mitigate wildfire effects and how to reduce the threat of wildfire. Their learning experience will culminate at 12:30 p.m. when the 8- to 10-year-olds will depart from the Boys & Girls Club, 673 S. Stewart St., Carson City, to plant seed mixes that they created during the educational program. The seed mixes contain native grasses and forbs that are not as flammable as other plants, such as cheatgrass. The goal is to provide vegetation on the burned area that will compete with cheatgrass and reduce the presence of cheatgrass. The children chose the seed mixes based on their ability to provide forage, habitat and erosion control.

The boys and girls will also visit the burned area in Lakeview to see Jeffrey pine seedlings planted there earlier in the year by volunteers. Then, they will visit the Nevada Division of Forestry Station No. 11, where Captain Brad Butti will talk briefly with the kids about the division's role in fighting wildland fires, including the Waterfall fire. The children will then move on to Timberline and see the Waterfall fire's effects there, including erosion concerns. Finally, they will visit Kings Canyon and see where the fire started, as well as learn more about the invasive weed, Russian knapweed, which has flourished after the fire.

New MedDirect Urgent Care opens

MedDirect has opened its fourth clinic at the Holbrook Health Center. The clinic is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

MedDirect is a Medicare provider and most insurances are accepted. Appointments can be scheduled and walk-ins are accepted at all times.

The Holbrook Health Center is located at 1550 South Highway 395, at the northwest corner of Holbrook Junction, in South Douglas County.

Bread of Life Christian Fellowship in Mound House will host guest evangelist Barbara Green on Friday through Sunday.
