Authorities are trying to determine what caused an early morning accident Monday that claimed the life of a 21-year-old man.
Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Eddie Bowers said the single-vehicle accident happened sometime before 3:45 a.m. when a passerby discovered the wreckage of a 1998 gold Ford Escort just west of the Highway 395 overpass on East Lake Boulevard.
Bowers said it appears the man sped through the underpass and drove straight into a cement wall on Old Highway 395. He said there were no brake marks to indicate the driver tried to stop.
He died on impact.
Bowers said as troopers were working the accident, a description of a suicidal subject from Washoe County was reported that matched the description of the vehicle at the scene.
Troopers turned the investigation over to the Washoe County Sheriff's Department. The name is being withheld until the man's family can be notified.
