INCLINE VILLAGE - The foreman of Sacramento-based Kodiak Roofing and Waterproofing was in critical condition Wednesday night after falling some 35 feet off the unfinished roof of the new fire station in Incline Village.

The accident occurred around 4 p.m. at 871 Tanager Street.

Construction workers gather outside the new fire station Wednesday afternoon where their foreman fell off the roof.

"He was doing one last inspection of the new roof before we shut down for the day and he just stepped off the edge," said one member of the construction crew who declined to give his name without his company's permission. "We were just getting ready to get off the roof when I heard him scream.

"I ran to the edge and saw him lying on the concrete below. I immediately called 911 and yelled for the other workers to help him."

The foreman's name has been withheld until his family can be notified.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief Mike Brown and Fire Chief Jim Linardos were the first paramedics on the scene.

Within 30 minutes they had loaded the man in a Care Flight helicopter. He was transported to Washoe County Medical Center in Reno and underwent emergency surgery Wednesday night.

Gary Wiley, the project superintendent for West Coast Contractors - the company building the new fire station, said this is the first serious accident on the site.

Nevada OSHA arrived at the site to investigate the accident at 6 p.m. Wednesday; officials said an incident report will be released "as soon as possible."
