A clothing distributor moved to an industrial park in northern Storey County, fleeing high workers' compensations costs and bringing 25 new jobs to the area.

Zak Gilbert, business development manager with the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, said Thursday that Rivers' End Trading Co. is leasing 100,000 square feet from DP Partners in Patrick.

"They approached EDAWN and said that they are struggling in California because of workers' compensation costs and they wanted a more business-friendly area," he said.

The new Storey County distribution center ships casual and active wear to California, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, the Pacific Northwest and Phoenix. The new center is 53 percent larger than its previous location.

The company closed its Anaheim, Calif., distribution center in December to open the new center at 625 Waltham Way.

The company brings $723,000 to Storey County's annual payroll. Rivers' End representatives could not be reached for comment.

Tim Rubald, executive director of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, said the company received a $7,800 deferral of sales and use tax dollars, which it will pay back over two years.

"That sales and use tax would have been charged on the equipment that they are purchasing for their new facility in Storey County," he said. "We also provided them with $25,000 of training money through the Train Employees Now program."

This program helps more than the company, he said, because the funds are given to an area community college which uses it to train the employees that the company needs.

"So the company gets trained employees and Nevada citizens upgrade their skills at the community college," Rubald said.

According to a company statement, Rivers' End was not able to renew the lease on its Anaheim building because it was rezoned to retail and residential. Visit the company online at http://www.riversendtrading.com/.
