Chanos raises four times opponent's contributions

Carson City Senator Mark Amodei has raised $170,950 in his bid for a third term representing the Capital Senatorial District.

Amodei, a Republican, is chairman of the Judiciary Committee as well as the interim committee which oversees the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Marlette Lake water system and the interim water study committee. He is also chairman of the committee studying the Public Employee Benefits Program.

Carson City's Assembly representative, Democrat Bonnie Parnell, also sits on that study panel.

Amodei's report listed in-kind contributions totaling $9,015 and expenses thus far of $57,770.

His report was one of several which arrived at the Secretary of State's Office after the Tuesday deadline. Like the others, it was not late because it was postmarked in time to meet the deadline.

Attorney General George Chanos, the Republican appointed late last year to replace Brian Sandoval, raised more than four times as much money as his only announced opponent, Catherine Cortez Masto.

Chanos' report lists a total of $1.14 million in contributions plus $71,111 worth of in-kind contributions.

Chanos was named to the post after Sandoval resigned to become a U.S. district judge in Reno. Chanos said when he was appointed he intended to run for the office this year.

Masto, former federal prosecutor and chief of staff to Gov. Bob Miller in the final days of his tenure in office, has raised $269,041. She got into the race more recently than Chanos and is expected to show increased contributions by the time the second campaign reports are due later this year.

Two sons of prominent Nevadans, Gov. Miller's son Ross and former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian's son Danny, both filed reports in their bids for secretary of state.

Miller reported $181,200 worth of contributions and $11,228 in expenses. Tarkanian raised less than half that amount - $88,460 - and spent $14,665. The other candidate in the race, Las Vegas sign company owner Brian Scroggins, reported $113,916 in contributions, with $39,504 in in-kind contributions and $23,072 worth of expenses.

Mark DeStefano of Las Vegas raised $305,053 in his bid for the treasurer's office. He has spent $70,624. Steve Martin of Las Vegas raised $54,830 toward his campaign for controller. His expenses totaled $19,885.
