Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-NV., has issued a statement touting Nevada's new sex-offender law and calling on Congress to use it as a national model.
"I applaud Nevada lawmakers for taking the lead in protecting our children," said Gibbons in the release.
The prime sponsors of SB341 are Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, and Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, who is one of Gibbons' major opponents in the race for governor.
Titus has referred to the legislation numerous times in her campaign for governor as one of the pieces of legislation of which she is most proud from the 2005 session.
The legislation strengthens Nevada's sex-offender registry to require sex offenders to be in compliance with their parole requirements to renew their driver's licenses, and mandates they renew those licenses every year.
It also creates an online registry that lets residents learn the actual addresses of offenders living near them and allows employers to obtain certain information about sex offenders.
Gibbons described the law as a model for national legislation and called for implementation of the driver's license requirements by all 50 states.
