Candidates for sheriff of Lyon County will participate in a forum sponsored by the Lyon County Democratic Central Committee 7 p.m. Monday at the Dayton Valley Country Club.

Commissioner candidates to speak at community center

A Lyon County Board of Commissioners candidates forum is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

It will be a round-table format and be moderated by Cary Dyer, executive director of the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Sponsors include the chamber, the Wild Horse Preservation League and Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties.

Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions through the moderator.

Aug. 5 golf scramble to benefit Dayton chamber

A golf scramble to benefit the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce will begin 8:30 a.m. Aug. 5 at the Dayton Valley Country Club.

The event, a four-person modified scramble, costs $110 per player and includes a continental breakfast, polo shirt, lunch, raffle prizes and greens fees with cart and range balls.

Musical group to play at The Connection Church

The musical group DCF will perform at the 8:30 and 10 a.m. services Sunday at The Connection Church in Dayton.

The Connection is located off Highway 50 in Dayton off Occidental Avenue, across from Riverpark Estates.

Equestrian group to hold poker ride

The Lyon County Horsemen's Association will hold a poker chip ride Saturday.

The ride, a 12-mile loop on a dirt trail, with a $50 first prize will be held at the Boy Scout Camp at Fort Churchill.

Participants will receive a poker chip with a number on it. Upon returning from the ride, each number is matched with a number on the prizes.

Registration is 9 a.m. and first rider out will be at 10 a.m.

Cost is $5 for LCHA members and a potluck dish and includes the park fee, lunch and one poker chip. Cost for nonmembers is $15. Additional poker chips are $5.

Lincoln exhibit traces slavery evolution

A new traveling exhibition opening at the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum in Virginia City on July 1 traces Abraham Lincoln's gradual transformation from an antislavery moderate into "The Great Emancipator," who freed all slaves with a Revolutionary War-time proclamation in 1863.

"Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation" will be on display until Oct, 20.

Organized by the Huntington Library of San Marino, Calif., and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, New York City, in cooperation with the American Library Association, this traveling exhibition is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

"Forever Free" draws upon original documents in the collections of the Huntington Library and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
