Alyce Coffey Kugler of the Carson-Douglas Rodeo Club got off to a respectable start in girls cutting at the National High School Finals Rodeo on Monday in Springfield, Ill.
The Douglas High student took 14th in the morning performance of the first go round with 207 points. While Kugler will have a lot of work to do to finish in the top 15 overall to make Sunday's finals, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Kugler finished just 16 points behind the top scorer in Monday morning's performance. There were still five performances left in the first go, including one last night.
Kugler won't compete again until the final performance of the second go on Saturday night. It figures Kugler will not to post a huge score to have any chance of making the finals.
Among other locals to go on Monday morning was Yerington's Hannah Vaughan, who took 22nd in barrel racing at 18.671 seconds. Another local who figures to have strong chance to make the finals, Jonathan Glocknitzer of Gardnerville, was scheduled to go in boys cutting in Monday night's performance.
