Fire crews working the Six Mile 2 fire are burning away fuels within the fire line this afternoon.
Residents will see an increase in the smoke, but the burnout is "well within the containment lines and poses no significant risk of escape," according to a press release from the Sierra Interagency Dispatch Center.
Burnout is sometimes necessary in order to minimize the potential for fuel to "flare up" and spot outside the containment line later, said the release.
The 1,733-acre fire burning east of Virginia City was 100 percent contained at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
The fire started at 4 p.m. Saturday from a lightning strike the day before.
