The Carson City Sheriff's Department is hosting its third annual National Night Out at Mills Park from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday.
The capital city will be among thousands of communities nationwide celebrating the 23rd annual crime- and drug-prevention event.
Representatives from various law-enforcement agencies will be there to offer traffic safety demonstrations and information on their departments.
Also on hand will be the Nevada National Guard, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, The U.S. Forest Service and Carson City's newly formed methamphetamine coalition, Partnership Carson City. Free hot dogs and soda will be offered.
Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, National Night Out involves more than 10,000 communities from all 50 states, as well as some Canadian cities and military bases around the world.
The event is designed to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals "letting them know neighborhoods are getting organized and fighting back," said Sheriff Kenny Furlong.
More than 34 million people are expected to participate in this year's event entitled "Take your stand against meth."
The event is being supported in part by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Nevada Office of Criminal Justice Assistance.
To show support, residents are asked to lock their doors, turn on their porch lights, and spend time outside with their neighbors or at Mills Park, Furlong said.
