Rasner placed on 15-day disabled list

Carson High graduate Darrell Rasner was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Rasner felt discomfort in his right shoulder while warming up in the bullpen Friday night, and was put on the 15-day disabled list before Saturday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

"In all probability, it will be gone in a few days," Yankees manager Joe Torre said. "It's nothing major, but where we are at this point in time, with Mariano (Rivera) down for a couple of days, we just can't afford not to have an arm here."

The Yankees' bullpen is short-handed without closer Mariano Rivera, who's expected to miss a few more days with a sore back.

Left-handed Matt Smith was recalled from Triple-A Columbus for the third time this season to replace Rasner.

Rasner, a 1999 CHS graduate, saw one relief appearance since being called up by the Yankees on Tuesday. Rasner entered the fifth inning with the bases loaded and no outs on Wednesday against the Tigers in Detroit.

On Rasner first pitch, Magglio Ordonez hit a two-run single on a fastball to cut the Yankees' lead to 6-5. But Rasner went on to retire the next five batters he faced, striking out one.

Rasner was in line to pick up his first Major League win before the Tigers came back for a 7-6 win.
