All-Sierra Nevada teams chosen in baseball and softball

Carson, Douglas and Galena High Schools each had four players placed on the all-Sierra Nevada baseball team.

The Northern 3A was also well-represented on the team as Dayton, Fernley and Truckee all had two representatives on the team. In softball, Carson and Douglas each had three players selected.

The all-Sierra Nevada teams consist of players from schools covered on a regular basis by newspapers in the Sierra Nevada Media Group: The Nevada Appeal, Fallon's Lahontan Valley News, the Record-Courier, the Tahoe Daily Tribune, the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, the Tahoe World and Truckee's Sierra Sun.

Sierra League Player of the Year Logan Parsley of Carson and High Desert League pitcher of the Year Tony Thompson of Galena were among those selected to the all-Sierra Nevada team. Parsley was joined by his teammates Brooks Greenlee, Josh Caron and Tony Fagan while Thompson was joined by his teammates Basim Azzam, Jacob Anderson and J.D. Peters.

For Douglas, Roman Davis, D.J. Brady, Ryan Laing and Nate Whalin were all selected.

Galena won the Northern 4A title while Carson and Douglas advanced to the Northern 3A semifinals.

Dayton, which won the Northern 3A title and advanced to the NIAA 3A State Tournament, had two players selected in Jeff Delaksi and Cory Yoder. Fernley's Erik Simpson and Travis McCurry and Truckee's Jason Champman and Scott Decker were also chosen.

In softball, Carson's Christa Casci, Dacey Hassey and Kaitlin Burroughs were all chosen while Mitzi Olsen, Tisha Luken and Lauren Hoppe were chosen fromDouglas. Fernley, the NIAA 3A State runner-up, had two players chosen, Heather Mathews and Quinn Hull-Taylor.

Truckee also had two players chosen in Corina Mincey and Dani Turner.

Rounding out the softball team were Galena's Kaitlin Porter and Fallons' Beth Ellis.

BASEBALL

Logan Parsley, Carson - Sierra League Player of the Year. In league, Parsley hit .472 with five home runs, 25 RBI, six doubles, two triples, 29 runs, a .943 slugging percentage and a .606 on base percentage. Parsley finished the season with six home runs.

Brooks Greenlee, Carson - Despite putting up monster offensive stats, just earned all-league second team honors. In league, Greenlee hit .473 with 24 runs, three home runs, 18 RBI, six doubles, two triples, an .818 slugging percentage and a .542 on base percentage.

Josh Caron, Carson - All-league first team. Caron was 5-2 with a 1.71 E.R.A. and 4-1 with a 1.69 E.R.A. in league. In the regular season, Caron also hit .303 with two homers, 10 RBI and two doubles.

Tony Fagan, Carson - All-league first team. In league, Fagan hit .419 with three home runs, 21 RBI, four doubles, a triple and a .661 slugging percentage. During the regular season as a pitcher, Fagan went 1-1 with a 3.20 earned run average with 16 strikeouts in 15.1 innings. His win was a big one. He beat Northern 4A runner-up McQueen 2-1 in a complete game effort.

Ryan Laing, Douglas - Led the league in homers, hits, RBI and broke the state record for homers (4) and RBI (10) in a game this season. All-league first team. He finished with eight homers, six doubles, 28 runs, a .419 average and a .903 slugging percentage.

D.J. Brady, Douglas - Threw two no hitters, had an earned run average of 2.16 and was second to Reno's Garrett Luippold in the league in strikeouts. Solid centerfielder, but a better pitcher. All-league first team. He had 50 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 35.2 innings. He went 7-5 and 6-2 in league.

Roman Davis, Douglas - Was one of the best defensive catchers in the state. Will play for WNCC next year. Tied for the league lead in triples with two.

Nate Whalin, Douglas - Four homers and 22 RBI placed him among league's top five. All-league first team. He hit .330 with a .617 slugging percentage and also had a 4-4 record on the mound.

Tony Thompson, Galena - High Desert League Pitcher of the Year. As a pitcher, he was 7-3 with a 2.19 earned run average overall on the year and had an excellent strikeout-to-walk ratio of more than 11-1 (56-5).

He also put up monster offensive stats: .458, 16 home runs, 53 RBI, 18 doubles, 1 triple. Should receive major Division I attention next year.

Basim Azzam, Galena - All-league first team. He hit .457 with three home runs, 31 RBI, 14 doubles and one triple.

Jacob Anderson, Galena - All-league first team. He went 9-0 with a 2.10 E.R.A. with 64 strikeouts and 17 walks.

J.D. Peters, Galena - All-league first team. He hit .341 with 2 home runs, 17 RBI, four doubles and a triple.

Jeff Young, Whittell - In 10 Northern 2A games, he hit .529 with two home runs, nine RBI and 10 stolen bases. He also gave Lovelock its first league loss with a 140-pitch, 16-strikeout, complete game effort over 10 innings. Northern 2A Co-Player of the Year.

Jeff Delaski, Dayton - All 3A State first team. In Northern 3A play Delaski hit .509 with 18 RBI.

Cory Yoder, Dayton - All 3A State first team. In Northern 3A play, Yoder hit .531 with one home run and 18 RBI. He was also 7-0 with a 2.39 E.R.A. with 43 strikeouts and 11 walks in 41 innings.

Jason Chapman, Truckee - The senior has representatives from the Reds and Angels scouting him. He broke the NIAA record with a 34-game hit streak (every game from start to finish). In 31 league and non-league games (excluding the three games of playoffs), Chapman hit .693. He had 14 home runs as a leadoff hitter, 13 doubles, six triples and a slugging percentage of 1.397. He knocked in 39 runs and scored 55 while striking out seven times and walking 11.

In 16 games in league, he hit .595 and had a slugging percentage of 1.276. He struck out twice and walked six times in 47 at-bats. And he led the team in stolen bases with 19 and runs with 31.

Scott Decker, Truckee - Besides being solid behind the plate, during the regular season, Decker led the team in RBI (22), doubles (7) and walks (10). The senior hit .448 and stole 15 bases. His slugging percentage was .673. He scored 20 runs on 22 hits in 49 at-bats.

Erik Simpson, Fernley - All-state second team. He had a 7-3 record with a 3.03 E.R.A. with 104 strikeouts in 62.3 innings. He also hit .361 with 30 doubles, three homers and 19 RBI.

Travis McCurry, Fernley - All-state first team. He hit .418 with 10 doubles and 10 RBI.

Honorable mention: Tyler May, Douglas; Royal Good, Kevin Schlange, Kyle Mandoki, Carson; Eric Maupin, Justin Norvik, Pete Lazzari, Craig Tanaka, Jake Hess, Galena; Rick Cornu, Fallon; John Hooper, Ben Tonon, Keven Sahlberg, Truckee; Franklin Orlando, North Tahoe.

SOFTBALL

Lauren Hoppe, Douglas - Best hitter on the team. All-league first team. She batted .471 with four home runs and 28 RBI.

Mitzi Olsen, Douglas - If not for her pitching, the Tigers would not have made the playoffs. All-league first team. She was 13-9 with 139 strikeouts in 130 innings.

Tisha Luken, Douglas - A clutch hitter and a solid defensive player at shortstop. An all-league first team pick.

Christa Casci, Carson - All-league first team. Casci hit .296 with 29 hits, 30 runs, six doubles, three triples, 14 RBI, a .418 slugging percentage, a .420 on base percentage and four stolen bases. She also had a 1.39 E.R.A. in 55.3 innings on the mound.

Kaitlin Burroughs, Carson - All-league first team. She hit .299 with 29 hits, 24 runs, two doubles, two triples, 11 RBI, a .412 slugging percentage, a .383 on base percentage and six stolen bases.

Dacey Hassey, Carson - All-league first team. Hassey hit .495 (46-for-93) with 29 runs, 15 doubles, one triple, three home runs, 36 RBI, a .774 slugging percentage, a .566 on base percentage and six stolen bases.

Kaitlin Porter, Galena - All-league first team. She finished with a .322 average.

Heather Mathews, Fernley - All 3A State second team. Matthews had a 19-8 record with a 1.87 earned run average with 248 strikeouts and just 33 walks. She also hit .393 with six doubles and 13 RBI. She held opponents to a .186 batting average.

Quinn Hull-Taylor, Fernley - At second base, she made just three errors all season in being named to the all-state 3A first team. She hit .329 with 12 doubles and 13 RBI.

Beth Ellis, Fallon - All High Desert League first team. She batted .423 with a .750 slugging percentage and four home runs, 15 RBI and seven doubles. She also homered off of Northern Nevada's top two pitchers, Spanish Springs' Mallory Darby and McQueen's Katie Eshelman.

Melony Cox, Dayton - An all-state 3A first team choice, Cox hit .500 in Northern 3A play with an .842 slugging percentage, six doubles, two triples, an inside-the-park home run, 15 RBI and 15 runs.

Dani Turner, Truckee - The senior made first-team all-league at first base. She finished the season with a .487 average, a 1.013 slugging percentage, 43 RBI and nine home runs in 26 games. Turner was also an excellent fielder.

Corina Mincey, Truckee - Made all-league first team as a designated hitter. Mincey had a .510 average, 28 RBI and three home runs.
