Senior Follies show brings in about $19,000 for Meals on Wheels

"Another Opening - Another Show" Senior Follies 2006 was a success for the Meals on Wheels program. Proceeds are estimated at $19,000 with some receipts still to be added.

According to Janice McIntosh, executive director of the Carson City Senior Citizens Center, Sunday's matinee was a near sell-out.

"We did pretty darn good," said McIntosh.

"But Jan (Hunt, director) had a stroke Friday evening, after the show. She was taken to the hospital and she did go home Sunday."

McIntosh said co-director Norma Conway stepped in, and along with emcee Max Baer Jr., kept the show on stage for Saturday and Sunday's performances.

"Norma is such a sweetheart to work with. She's professional, kind and knows what she wants. We were so thrilled to have her and Max. Everybody just loved the show."

Hunt has gone through a battery of tests and will undergo several more. She is at home and doing well.

"(The stroke) happened right after the show," Hunt said. "I was talking with someone and said, 'Let's go to the Old Globe and have some coffee or something.' And that was it.

"I walked outside and couldn't remember where the Old Globe was, or why I was going. Nothing. I couldn't remember anything.

"My doctor said there are some things wrong, but I'm going to Reno to do more tests."

Fortunately for Hunt, former lieutenant governor Lonnie Hammargren and his wife were staying with her and her husband, and noticed while standing outside of the Community Center that Hunt was having difficulties. Hammargren is a neurosurgeon in Las Vegas.

"Lonnie said, 'We need to get you to the hospital,'" Hunt said. "We need to go now."

McIntosh said everyone in the production worked together very well.

"The seniors really bonded," McIntosh said. "There are a lot of new talents out there. And Max did a sensational job.

"People have been coming in all week saying it was the best one they've seen. We're so fortunate Jan and Norma stepped forward to put on this year's show."
