Sheriff hosts July town hall meetings

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong has scheduled a series of town hall meetings to take place at the Community Center in July.

"These meetings are intended to give people the tools needed to help them and help us to police the community," Furlong said.

Three seminars are scheduled through July, ending with the National Night Out celebration Aug. 1 at Mills Park.

On Saturday, July 8, in the Sierra Room, the meeting's topic will be volunteerism and maintaining the safety of Carson City, Furlong said.

The Carson City Meth Coalition, Partnership Carson City, will also be present.

Lt. Ray Saylo said Neighborhood Watch Coordinator Deputy Ray Guzman will talk about the Neighborhood Watch program, as will Bob Peck, the Carson City Sheriff's Office volunteer coordinator.

Following each of the programs, the floor will be opened up to questions. People wishing to volunteer may sign up.

On Saturday, July 15, there will be a seminar on drug awareness. Partnership Carson City will present information, followed by a presentation by the Sheriff's Department on drug awareness, education and prevention.

Topics of discussion will be drugs such as methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, usage and the effects of drug abuse on individuals and families.

On Saturday, July 22, the meeting will focus on crime prevention and protecting oneself from becoming a victim.

Furlong said these are the first town hall meetings he's hosted since taking office in 2002. He hopes to make them an annual event.

"I look forward to this. Better informing the community about what is going on can ease some worries," Furlong said.

He said the meetings are also a perfect opportunity to solicit volunteers.

"We want to get as many people involved as we can in Carson City," he said.
