Former University of Nevada and Reed standout Bub Madrid had two hits, including the go-ahead two-run single, as the Reno Silver Sox rallied for an 8-3 win over the Yuma Scorpions on Saturday in Yuma.
Ben Thurmond pitched four strong innings to improve to 4-0 on the season. The first-place Silver Sox improved to 15-6 in the Golden Baseball League and lead second place Long Beach (11-10) by four games.
The Silver Sox trailed 2-1 when they exploded for seven runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-2 lead. Marcus Jensen doubled, Edgar Varela walked and Doug Gredvig singled to load the bases.
Caleb Maher followed with an RBI single and then Madrid hit his two-run single to give Reno a 4-2 lead. Reno scored its last four runs of the inning on a fielder's choice, error, balk and wild pitch.
Former UNLV and Reed standout C.J. Lang singled and Varela doubled to give Reno a 1-0 lead in the first.
Thurmond allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out six and walking one. Nate Sevier and Scott Schneider finished up for Reno as both pitched a scoreless inning.
Gredvig and Maher both also had two hits for Reno. The two teams will finish their series in Yuma with a doublheader today.
