Bowman goes 3-for-4 with a double for Wolf Pack in defeat at Oregon State

Cole Gillespie homered and drove in four runs for Oregon State as the 14th-ranked Beavers beat Nevada 13-4 in non-conference baseball Friday at Goss Stadium.

Dayton's Matt Bowman continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Bowman is now hitting .386 (17-for-44) on the season.

Dallas Buck pitched five innings for the win, improving his record to 3-0 this season.

The Beavers (7-4 overall) and Wolf Pack (4-9) continue their series on today at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Both games can be heard on the internet at www.osubeavers.com.

On Friday in front of a crowd of 1,387, Gillespie's two-out, three-run homer to left-centerfield in the bottom of the first inning put the Beavers in front for good.

The Beavers had 12 hits and stranded just seven runners, an improvement over several low-scoring games this season in which their runners-left-on numbers were in double digits.

Nevada got back within 3-2 on an unearned run in the top of the second and Terry Walsh's solo homer in the top of the third. The Wolf Pack threatened to take the lead in the top of the fourth when it put runners at second and third with two out, but Buck struck out Brian Joynt on a full-count pitch to end the inning.

OSU answered in the bottom of the fourth with Mitch Canham's two-out, two-run homer into the ROTC obstacle course beyond the rightfield fence to make it 5-2. In Buck's five innings, he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out five.

Oregon State increased its lead to 6-2 on back-to-back doubles by Scott Santschi and Darwin Barney in the bottom of the fifth inning, then scored three times in the sixth to make it 9-2 as Ryan Gipson and Tyler Graham drove in runs.

For Nevada, Walsh was 2-for-4 and Baker Krukow came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double as the Wolf Pack collected nine hits.
