Do you dream of plucking a crisp apple right from your own apple tree? Attend a free Master Gardener workshop, "Selecting and Growing Fruit Trees," presented by Michael Janik, Master Gardener volunteer of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, at 6:30 p.m.Tuesday at Bartley Ranch in Reno.
Growing fruit trees in Northern Nevada may be challenging, but it's not impossible, according to Janik. He did his Master Gardener training at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. Janik says he has put his training and additional research to work, growing more than 100 apple varieties in his 400-square-foot orchard. He also grows several cherry, plum, peach and nectarine trees; as well as currants, grapes, elderberries, raspberries and hops. He is accomplished at grafting and specializes in growing espalier fruit trees, which are trained to grow flat up against a trellis or lattice.
Janik will discuss selecting, planting, and caring for fruit trees in Northern Nevada. He will also talk about managing fruit tree diseases and pests.
The workshop is part of the "Gardening in Nevada" series of free classes presented by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension. "Gardening in Nevada" is cosponsored by Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.
