Help area children get shoes, hear and speak better

Easter is right around the corner, and the annual Easter Shoe Program for the Carson City School District's Children-In Transition-Program is under way.

With a call from Nellie and Lois requesting more than 60 shoe tags for members of St. Paul's and St. Peter's churches, we are off to a great start in making sure children within our community have new shoes and socks.

This event is more then shoes to me, it is reaching out to children, giving them hope, kindness and, most of all, love.

I can't tell you how many children know that you care for them when they ask me each year, "Who gave us these shoes?"

My answer is always the same, "A very caring, loving stranger within our community who cared enough about you. They think you are very, very special and deserve a new pair of shoes."

All who purchase shoes and the school personnel who help me with sizing, referring and fitting the shoes have made this program a huge success.

The first pair to be sold this year was to a retired teacher from our district, who said that before this program, she would buy shoes for needy students in her classroom out of her own pocket.

Last year, a woman told me she purchased them because she had gone through the Depression and knew how it felt not to have shoes.

Thanks to all of you through the years that have helped the children in my program smile, jump higher, laugh louder, and be happy when they try out their new shoes.

Frank Taylor is always on up on what's happening in Carson City. When he saw the advertising for Soroptimist Oscars Night for the ladies, he wanted the men to know there is a "men's night" here, too.

It is the annual Carson Sertoma Club annual Game Feed. I really appreciate all the club members who help children with hearing and speech difficulties receive needed items.

The proceeds goes directly back into our community for children. And for you wild hunter types, Sertoma also has raffle prizes. Frank, I think Maizie would make a great Bud girl.

This is an open call to all parents, co-workers, family members, friends and those interested in doing a good deed for education: The eighth-grade students of Carson Middle School are participating in the annual Career Study.

The students have researched career options and created professional portfolios. They are now ready to put their workplace communication skills to the test.

Ananda Campbell is seeking volunteers to conduct job interviews with students. These interviews allow the students to practice communication skills while preparing for the work force.

Our goal is to make the experience as true to life as possible. The interviewer will ask a few questions and fill in a simple response sheet for each student. This is a fun and worthwhile event.
