Nevada baseball falls to Oregon State

The University of Nevada (4-10) was shut out by 13th ranked Oregon State (8-4) 4-0 on Saturdayin Corvallis.

OSU scored first in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Graham started the inning with a walk and stole second and third base where he scored on Bill Rowe's RBI single. The Beavers loaded the bases in the inning but a 4-6-3 double play ended the inning and kept OSU from putting more runs on the scoreboard.

A fielding error by Nevada in the bottom of the fifth led to a pair of unearned runs. With two outs Shea McFeely reached on an error by Wolf Pack third baseman Brian Joynt. Two singles later the Beavers led 3-0. In the bottom of the eighth OSU scored its fourth run after Darwin Barney hit a ball that dropped between three Pack defenders in left center field for a double. Rowe drove in his second run of the game with a single to right field to make the final score 4-0.

Carson High's Owen Brolsma came on to retire the only batter he faced for the final out of the inning.

OSU starter Jonah Nickerson (2-2) tossed a complete game shutout allowing just five hits to even his record at 2-2. Nickerson struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Pack starter Ryan Rodriguez (2-3) pitched well and surrendered three runs but just one was earned in his five innings on the mound.

Nevada got two hit performances from Durell Williams and shortstop Leo Radkowski (2-for-2). Radkowski came off the bench in the fourth for starter Ryan Foley. Foley broke the index finger on his right hand attempting to field a ball off the bat of McFeely. Dayton's Matt Bowman went 0-for-4.

Barney led the Beavers with a game-high three hits. Four other OSU hitters had two hits in the game. Rowe drove in a game high two.

The final game of the three-game series is slated for noon today.
