(Staff reports) A Carson City woman was injured Monday morning in a single-vehicle accident in Washoe Valley.
Coral Hightower, 44, was taken by helicopter to Washoe Medical Center following the 8:30 a.m. wreck near Cattlemen's restaurant. She suffered head, face and leg injuries.
According to Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Ron Larson, Hightower was southbound on Highway 395 in the fast lane when she drifted toward the shoulder, hit a fence and traveled up a telephone-pole support wire. Larson said Hightower's vehicle became airborne and then rolled once before landing on its wheels about 50 feet south of the telephone pole in the shoulder.
The road was closed for about 30 minutes for the helicopter and again when the tow truck recovered the vehicle.
Larson said it appears an existing medical condition Hightower suffers from contributed to the accident.
Nevada police agencies get $1.8 million in grants
Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., has announced $1.8 million in federal grants for Nevada law enforcement agencies.
He said the money under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program will help police agencies buy equipment to improve their ability to prevent crime and catch violators.
"Modern technological advancements provide new and innovative ways to fight crime and programs such as Byrne Grants help fund Nevada's ability to remain at the forefront of today's crime fighting capabilities," he said.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety will use the money to buy field training software, tasers, radar guns, wireless receivers, surveillance monitors and crime analysis equipment among other things.
Jury selection begins in stabbing- death trial
(Appeal News Service) Jury selection began Monday and continues today in the trial of Timothy Brooks, accused in the stabbing death of Robert Ash, 47, of Newcastle, Calif.
Brooks, who was living in Truckee at the time of the August incident, allegedly stabbed Ash outside of Syd's Bagelry in Tahoe City 30 minutes after Ash allegedly cut off Brooks and his wife while driving on Highway 89 near Squaw Valley.
Ash, who grew up in Incline Village, had been working on projects in Truckee the previous year and was spending time in town when the stabbing occurred.
