(Appeal Capitol Bureau) - Chuck Chinnock has announced his retirement as director of the Department of Taxation.
Chinnock, 60, has been director since July 2002.
His wife, Birgit Baker, retired two months ago from state service and Chinnock said he wanted to join her "to take advantage of all I have planned and worked for."
"The state of Nevada is losing an incredibly valuable public servant who has truly been an asset to my administration and the people of this great state," said Gov. Kenny Guinn.
Chinnock was deputy director of taxation for a year before he was appointed director.
Prior to that, he had a 30-year career with the Nevada Air National Guard including service in the Gulf War. He retired from the guard as a brigadier general.
He said the highlights of his service in taxation include creation of the Uniform Tax System and efforts in recent legislative sessions to broaden and stabilize the state's tax base.
The department administers collection of nearly $4 billion a year in state and local government revenue from 19 different tax sources.
The revenue is distributed to provide funding for all levels of government in Nevada from schools and improvement districts to cities and counties as well as the state itself.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Department has seats available for the 2006 Senior Citizen Law Enforcement Academy.
The academy begins March 22, and classes will be held Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. through May 31.
Topics of instruction include fire prevention, emergency medical information, uniform patrol duties, jail division duties, criminal investigation, crime scene processing, narcotics and gang information, firearms-training simulator, court proceedings and ID theft and fraud prevention.
The classes are at the Douglas County Law Enforcement and Judicial Building, 1625 Eighth St. in Minden.
