Collaborative talks have led to an interim agreement for the University of Nevada, Reno to sell - approximately 60 acres at the northwest corner of Mill Street and McCarran Boulevard in east Reno - to the Truckee River Flood Management Project.
The proposed sale was scheduled to be presented to the Flood Project Coordinating Committee at its March 10 meeting, to the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents at its March 16-17 meeting in Reno and to the Washoe County Board of County Commissioners at its March 21 meeting.
In September, regents agreed to enter into an intergovernmental property transfer for a 55-acre parcel based on a purchase price of $12.1 million. The proposed purchase price for the additional acreage is $1.1 million, bringing the total purchase price for the entire parcel to $13.2 million.
Funding for this public safety project originated from the sales tax enabled by the Legislature and enacted by the Washoe County Commission.
"Through further consultation and discussion, there is an improved understanding of flood control land needs and engineering requirements," said Joe Crowley, interim University president. "This parcel will be key. Our determination is that selling the entire 60 acres will better achieve the goals of the regional flood management project."
