Gardnerville marine honored

A Gardnerville marine deployed in Iraq has been honored with a meritorious mast for his service overseas. Lance Cpl. Miguel Melara received the honor Jan. 24 for his work from Jan. 18-24. Melara is a member of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines and recently became a platoon intelligence representative.

In presenting the honor, his commanding officer said Melara "performed his duties in an outstanding manner. His attitude and diligent work ethic contributed greatly to the company's success throughout difficult and dangerous counter-insurgency operations in Haditha, Iraq."

The eighth-grade students of Carson Middle School are preparing for their annual career study by researching career options and creating professional portfolios.

A student named Tanner from Conway School in Mount Vernon, Wash., wrote in recently to the Nevada Appeal to request information on Nevada.

"Dear people of Nevada, I have recently started writing letters for my state report," he said. "Nevada is an awesome state in my opinion. Nevada is also a state I know little about. It would be nice of you to send something important or something that has a lot of information about Nevada. A mini flag or a poker chip would be great for state reports."

A team of Sunset Rotarians and members of the Washoe Zephyr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution joined together to place Old Glory at the new Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center on March 4.

The rotarians donated the flag poles while the Daughters donated the flag. Dr. Rex Baggett served as the emcee for the Rotary Club, and Hazel Parkins led the assembly in The Pledge of Allegiance.

Lauren Scyphers, a 2004 Douglas High School graduate, was crowned Miss Nevada USA in November and will compete for the Miss USA 2006 title, April 21, in Baltimore, Md. The competition will be televised and the winner will spend a year in New York.

Lauren's family wants to give her a send off she will never forget, but they need the help of others so her family and friends can join her in Baltimore and cheer her on.

"This will be a fabulous experience for Lauren, and Nevada too," said Lauren's mother, Patty Scyphers.

Gilles LoGourge and Yves Gigot, the owners of La Ferme restaurant in Genoa, will sponsor this event.
