Carson golf dominates league opener

The Carson High golf team made a dominant statement to begin the year in its opening Sierra League Tournament.

J.T. Cockerill shot a 2-under-par 69 at the Sierra Sage course to lead Carson to a 380 and a first place finish in the Sierra League event on Wednesday. Due to the recent weather conditions, the event originally scheduled for Tuesday, was delayed by one day.

Carson easily outdistanced Reno High, which took second at 413. Douglas was third at 440.

"This is the lowest score we've shot in the three years I've been here," said Carson coach Rod Butler, who began his third year as the team's coach.

Cockerill was the low score medalist. Also for Carson, Scott Jenkins shot a 74 to take second, Jimmy Potter fired a 77 to placed fifth, Matt Mitchell was 7th with a 79 and Zack Rispin was eighth with an 81. Freshman Jonathan Singer also shot a 92 for the Senators.

"Everybody played really well," Butler said. "I was happy with the way they played. They played solid all the way around.

"They came in saying the need to work on their wedge play and some putting. They're all happy with their scores."

But Butler cautioned it's just the first tournament as there are still five league events and the zone event to go. "You can't get overexcited about playing one good tournament," Butler said.

The next tournament will be on Tuesday at Washoe. "That will be a good indicator," Butler said. "That course is tougher than Sierra Sage."
