Fallon
Stillwater viewing platform to be dedicated
The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony of the new viewing platform at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge at 11 a.m. Friday.
CBMU-303, the 'Seabees' unit stationed at NAS Fallon constructed the overlook, with the help of CC Communications.
With additional assistance by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Birdlife International/Rio Tinto, Nevada Commission on Tourism and Spring Wings, Inc., additional orientation and interpretive materials and a new tour loop are planned.

Lahontan Garden Club to hold iris show
The Lahontan Garden Club will hold its annual Iris Show at the Churchill County Library, 553 S. Maine St., Fallon, next week.
The show is free to the public, and everyone is invited to come. See the beautiful irises on display or bring your own beauties to contribute to the event (vases are provided).
The iris show runs from 9 a.m. Monday and to 4 p.m. Thursday.
Women's intro to firearms planned
A ladies only introduction to firearms seminar will take place 7-8:30 p.m. May 23 in the county commissioners' chambers in the Churchill County Administration Building, 155 N. Taylor St., Fallon

Candidates speak to GOP women
Republican candidates for secretary of state will address the Fernley Republican Women at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Truck Inn, I-80 at exit 48, Fernley.

Silver Springs
'Celebrate the River Day' held Saturday
Park entry fees at Fort Churchill State Historic Park in Silver Springs will be waived for "Celebrate the Carson River Day," 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
Activities will be held in the John Fremont Picnic Area, Highway 95A in Silver Springs.

Lyon County Fly-In at the airport
The annual Lyon County Fly-in and Air Fest is at the Silver Springs airport 8 a.m.-4 p.m. May 20-21, Armed Forces Day weekend.
This year's theme is "Women in Aviation." Participants and attendees will have the chance to meet pioneering pilots from throughout Northern Nevada and California.
Admission is $5, and includes parking.
Volunteers are needed. All volunteers will be admitted for free and receive an event T-shirt and be formally recognized.

National Historic Preservation Month celebrated in VC
National Historic Preservation Month will be celebrated in Virginia City during three days of events today through Sunday. There will be several exhibit openings and events throughout Virginia City.

'Comstock Kids' summer program offered
Comstock Kids, a summer program for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade, is June 15-Aug. 23. There will be swimming, cooking, birding, field trips, gardening, pottery, photography, yoga, music, science, art and creative writing.
Cost is $80 a week or $35 a day and includes a T-shirt, field trips and all materials except for swimming. Children should bring a sack lunch, snacks, and plenty of fluids, but no soda. Call 847-9311 or 721-6849.
Community Chest sponsors 'Teen Adventures' program
The Community Chest and the Storey County Task Force are sponsoring a summer program for sixth- through 12th-graders.
There will be several classes and field trips.
A baby-sitting class teaches participants CPR, first aid, and how to be a better sitter.
There will be a trip to Sky Tavern's ropes course for leadership.
A tobacco and alcohol awareness overnight at Zephyr Point is also planned.

Sierra Club plans weekend hikes
Sierra Club hikes around Virginia City and surrounding areas are set for Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the group will hike the V&T roadbed from Gold Hill to Mound House. A vehicle shuttle is necessary for this one-way 12-mile hike.
During the hike, the historic and modern V & T, and overviews of historic and modern mining operations will be discussed.
On Sunday, the group will hike an eight-mile loop on McClellan Peak. Hikers will see part of the route of the 1870 wooden box flume which brought water from the Carson Spur above Lake Tahoe to Virginia City and will discuss the water works.
There will be overviews of Mound House, Carson City, Washoe Lake and Reno. High-clearance vehicles or ride-sharing will be necessary.
No dogs allowed on the hikes.
