School district looking to sell land off Highway 50

The Carson City School District is considering selling a 2.13-acre piece of property assessed for $19,600 after a potential buyer contacted the district.

"We've never had any particular plans for it and there's another complexity to the piece of property, which is there's no access to it. So it's landlocked," said Mike Mitchell, director of operations for the school district.

The plot of land, south of Highway 50 and west of Deer Run Road, is not only landlocked, but is in a flood plain. The district has owned it for at least 20 years.

"I don't even know how we got it to tell you the truth," he said.

Mitchell will bring the matter up to the school board of trustees at their meeting Tuesday night at the community center. If trustees decide the district should sell, the item will return for a vote on the May 23 meeting. The piece of land would have to be designated as surplus property before it could be sold.

"I'm guessing we would set a minimum price (on the land)," Mitchell said. "It would have to be done by sealed bid and we would probably use the assessed value as a minimum to determine what the sales price would be."

Mitchell said because of its lack of access, it might have more worth to adjacent property owners who could expand.

The property is north of Morgan Mill Road, and two or three pieces of property west of Deer Run.

"We don't foresee any need for that property and would like to know if we should proceed as designating it as surplus property and advertise it for sale," Mitchell said.

Because it's in a floodplain, the site would not be suitable for storage. Most school sites are at least 10 acres.

Mitchell once considered relocating the transportation center to it.

"It's really not conducive to that," he said. "Even if you get access to it, then you would be trying to get buses out onto Highway 50. Yes, storage is a possibility, but having the storage building somewhere like that without any connectivity to the rest of the district doesn't make a lot of sense either."
