Warning signs

Indications your child may be using meth:

• Negative changes in school: Increased absences, declining grades, dropping out of extracurricular activities.

• Changes in friends.

• Increased secrecy about possessions or activities.

• Periods of hyperactivity, talkativeness and high energy followed by depression and deep sleep.

• Noticeable weight loss.

• Skin sores or scabs.

• Use of incense, room deodorant, or perfume to hide smoke or chemical odors.

• Subtle changes in conversation with friends - more secretive, using "coded" language.

• Change in clothing choices, especially wearing clothes that reflect or promote the drug culture.

• Increase in borrowing money.

• Evidence of drug paraphernalia (pipes, rolling papers).

• Eye drops to mask bloodshot eyes or dilated pupils.

• New use of mouthwash or breath mints to cover odors.

• Criminal activity - theft, gang activity, violence, vandalism.

• Family management and conflict issues.

Common side effects of meth use

• Anxiety

• Body tremors

• Convulsions

• Dry, itchy skin

• Hallucinations

• Heart palpitations

• Hyperthermia (elevated temperature)

• Impaired speech

• Loss of appetite

• Paranoia

• Rise in blood pressure

Long-term Effects

• Death

• Addiction

• Anorexia

• Bad teeth (meth mouth)

• Chronic fatigue

• Fatal kidney and lung disorders

• High blood pressure, cardiac arrest, stroke

• Inflammation of the heart

• Irreversible damage to blood vessels

• Liver damage

• Malnutrition

• Seizures

Neurological and psychological effects

Brain Damage:

• Damage to brain cells

• Parkinson's-like tremors

• Drug-induced psychosis

Psychological problems:

• Emotional instability

• Mood swings

• Personality changes

• Strong depression
