Carson City residents who also are registered voters can help the city create policy by volunteering to serve on an array of boards, committees and commissions.
• There are two openings on the Parks and Recreation Commission, terms for both seats end in January 2008.
Responsibilities include advising the board on the use of city parks and to protect the rights of residents to use the recreation sites and engage in activities. Members need to commit to at least 10 hours each month.
• There are two openings on the Carson River Advisory Committee, and these terms end in June 2009.
Both seats are for owners of property within or near the river corridor: One is for someone owning less than 20 acres; the other is for someone owning at least 20 acres.
These volunteers advise the city about development, maintenance and operation of the river. The responsibility can take up to 10 hours each month.
Applicants must turn in paperwork for these groups by May 31.
• There are three openings on the wildlife advisory board. Two openings are for three-year terms ending in July 2009; one is a two-year term ending in July 2008.
This group manages wildlife matters, and people being sought are those involved in outdoor sports, or in ranching or farming. A commitment of up to six hours a month is required.
• There are two openings on the planning commission, and the two terms end in June 2010. The commission oversees city matters about planning, zoning, land use and growth management. These volunteers will devote up to 16 hours each month.
• There is one opening on the library board of trustees, and the term ends in June 2010. The board oversees the library's policy and budget. Members will devote up to eight hours a month.
Applications for these groups must be returned by June 15.
Final appointments for all of the boards are made by the Board of Supervisors.
